Many builders in the Cleveland area are family affairs,
where the company is part of the fabric of the family's
relationships. For Rob Myers, a native of Shaker Heights and
president of Myers Homes, entry into the home construction
business would have to come from a different direction. His
family, although possessed of an entrepreneurial bent, was
not involved in the construction business. With a degree in
geology, Mr. Myers found few takers among the businesses he
contacted for employment upon his return to the Cleveland
area in 1985.
One company willing to take a chance on a geology major with
no experience was North Royalton-based Gross Builders.
Starting as a field superintendent, Rob rose both in
experience and responsibility until he was responsible for
developing and building many of Gross' large-scale
residential projects. After eight years with Gross Builders,
Rob….created a single-family home building company - Myers
Homes.
Currently one of the three featured builders building in
Canyon Lakes in Bainbridge….., Myers Homes specializes in
homes priced from $400,000 to $1M+. Canyon Lakes,
characterized by its tall tree woodlands, parklike drives,
and rolling hills, is one of the premier communities of the
Chagrin Valley. With lot prices starting at $150,000, Myers
Homes offers beautiful wooded sites and private cul-de-sac
lots for its homes of distinction. Myers Homes' offerings at
Canyon Lakes are known for their quietly elegant
architectural design, making great use of stone and lap
siding textures. Working closely with Bob Montanari of
Westwork Architectural Studio, Myers Homes creates designs
with unique features such as the home featured here where
the design team crafted a master retreat complete with
built-ins and fireplace. "Each party brings their separate
talents.

I work with Bob
and massage the customers' needs into a concept Bob gets
excited for. Bob interprets these needs into plans which
ultimately are not only very buildable, but very exciting
for the buyer," explains Rob. The collaboration resulted in
a Cleveland Choice Award in 1998 for Best Exterior
Architecture - Myers Homes' first entry.
Good design is not the only goal for Myers Homes.
Incorporating lasting and durable construction methods into
its homes is equally important to Mr. Myers. For example,
Myers Homes utilizes the Tuff-N-Dri basement waterproofing
system. The benefit to buyers is the 20-year transferable
warranty that the Tuff-N-Dri system carries. Additionally,
Rob insists that each home have premium gravel backfill
around each basement wall to within two feet of grade
regardless of the requirements of the local building
department. Certainly not stylish specs, but they afford a
lasting value to the future owners of their homes. Further,
most Myers Homes' designs utilize the "silent floor" system
of engineered floor joists, giving each home a flatter,
stronger, more durable floor. Coupled with their use of 7/8
inch floor sheathing, each Myers Home's structure feels
rock-solid. It is a good thing each home has an "old-time"
feel, because the finish work of each Myers Home is
distinguished by trim details not featured in new homes in
decades. All of their own trim is installed by their own
craftsmen, not subbed out to outside contractors. This gives
Myers Homes complete control of their finished product and
enables them to craft wide variety of built-in options for
buyers.
Another goal of Myers Homes is the establishment of
long-lasting relationships with suppliers and
subcontractors, some of which go back almost 15 years. In
fact, the first person Rob hired when starting with Gross
Builders was Ray Watson, who is still with Rob as a
part-time trim carpenter…
